QUIPQUIPQUIP: Top 10 things not to say to a female reader of superhero comics

dcwomenkickingass:

Just sayn’

1. The people who read superhero comics are men and sex sells. If you don’t like it don’t read the comics.

So why is the top selling comics of 2011 a book that has no female characters in it? Or why are the Batman books the top selling books when they rarely…

Harley Quinn’s Cork Gun
(created October 2011)

When my dear friend and surrogate little sister, barbieswithbettyfinn, revealed that she was going to cosplay Harley Quinn at Melbourne Armageddon Expo in 2011 I knew instantly that was the perfect costume for her and I wanted to do my part to help her out.

I chose to make her the cork gun instead of the mallet because of the ease of transport (we were travelling 8 hours from Adelaide to Melbourne with a carload of props and armour).

I didn’t try to replicate a particular design of her gun but instead cobbled together a few different ideas based on what I could accomplish.

The handle is from a toy snub-nose pistol that was surprisingly of a reasonable scale and I built over it with EVA foam. The cork itself was made of a foam wrapped in a sheet of cork. The cork was never permanently glued in place so I could repair or replace it easily if needed but my friend discovered this was handy so she could use it to store stuff in there!

I didn’t tell her I was working on this and presented it to her in our hotel room the morning of the first day of the convention. Her reaction pretty much made my weekend. :)

I’m glad you like it, my favourite Harley. <3

Another thing

I’m actually more than a little surprised RDJ didn’t get more say on how to play an addiction storyline, if that’s the story they were actually trying to tell. I mean, seriously, that man’s whole career is built on having overcome addiction.

So I finally saw Iron Man 2

I’m late to the party, I know. It’s just..I enjoyed the first Iron Man movie so much, and then heard crap things about the second one, I didn’t want to spoil my fun with that world. But, I’m glad I saw it.

The qualms I heard about the film make sense. There are a bunch of SHIELD things shoehorned in, though I can’t complain about the choice one-liners that came with those scenes (Phil Coulson has the best line in the movie, by far). There were too many stories and not enough build on any of them to support a coherent narrative. Okay.

But. But. But.

The “alcoholism” storyline—the one most associated with Tony Stark—wasn’t about the alcohol. Not really. No, this was a film about a suicidal superhero. That fact was mostly ignored by everyone in the cast except RDJ and possibly Samuel L. Jackson. The alcohol was most assuredly an exacerbating factor to Tony’s depression, but bigger red flags are EVERYWHERE. Giving away belongings, tidying up his affairs, not planning for the future, a sense of hopelessness (as evidenced by giving up on finding a new power source that, you know, won’t poison his blood), avoidance and isolation. These are all huge warning signs, not to mention Tony’s propensity toward manic and impulsive behavior—hell, even a narcissistic personality is rooted in self-loathing and feelings of inadequacy. This film could have done a much better job at being a teaching moment about mental health and the importance of support networks.

But yes, the film focuses on silly antics that turn violent and more than a little sad when Tony’s drunk. They should have been more worried about the billionaire who feels he has nothing to lose.

SO SAYETH THE THERAPIST.
